Lotteries Are The Most Common Form Of Gambling Globally

The lotteries segment of the global gambling market was the largest in 2018, accounting for 46.1% of the market. This segment grew from $207.4 billion in 2018 to $260.5 billion in 2022 at an annual growth rate of nearly 6%. This can be attributed to the high popularity of lotteries globally. Major countries such as China do not consider lotteries as a form of betting and they are considered legal. This also contributes to the large size of the lotteries segment.

The global gambling market, segmented by type, includes lotteries, casino, sports betting, and others (e.g. bingo halls). Lottery is a form of gambling in which winners are decided by the random drawing of lottery ticket numbers.

A survey was conducted on gambling participation by the Gambling Commission in 2017, in Great Britain, among individuals who participated in gambling. According to the survey, 45% of adults aged 16 years and above had participated in gambling in the past four weeks, of which 48% of participants were male gamblers and 41% of participants were female gamblers. Around 33% of gamblers gamble once in a week.

According to the survey, the most popular activity in gambling was the National Lottery draws. Scratchcards was another popular gambling activity, followed by other lotteries. About 31% of gamblers gambled only on the National Lottery draws.

The Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey was conducted in 2015 in Australia and 17,606 people participated in the survey. According to the survey, lottery was the most common gambling activity with 76% of gamblers indulging in it, followed by instant scratch tickets with 22%, racing with 14%, sports betting with 8%, casino tables with 3%, and bingo with 3% participation.

According to the survey, in 2015, individual gamblers on an average spent $695 on lotteries, $248 on instant scratch tickets, $1,308 on racing, $1,032 on sports betting, $1,396 on casino tables, and $1,758 on poker annually.

The lotteries segment is also the only form of gambling that has been legalized in some countries. China bans all forms of gambling except lotteries. The China Sports Lottery and China Welfare Lottery are examples of products/services provided by the Chinese government. These were also the two largest players in the global gambling market, together accounting for more than 16% of the total market share in 2018.

In countries such as Canada, India, and the USA, the legal status of gambling activities varies by province. For instance, in India, land-based lotteries are legal in only 13 states. In the USA, land-based casino gambling is legal in 18 states.
